Plastic decontamination is crucial to ensure that their reuse is safe and effective. Traditional washing methods used in recycling only remove surface dirt, without getting rid of the toxic compounds and odors that may have been absorbed.
Furthermore, if plastics have been in contact with decomposing organic material or are contaminated, and are not properly separated in recycling containers, these substances remain in the plastic, which means that many of them end up being incinerated.
That is why at Fych, we have developed a process of decontamination that also eliminates odors, in order to achieve the highest standards of quality and safety, while maintaining our commitment to environmental sustainability.
At Fych Technologies, we implement a comprehensive approach to the decontamination of recycled plastics, combining two methods that allow us to achieve an effective and sustainable solution.
Our main plastic decontamination method is based on a mechanical process where exclusively water vapor is used.
This process is based on the principle of internal diffusion of toxic substances and odorous compounds. During the treatment, the high temperature generates a decrease in the boiling point of these compounds, which do not mix with water, facilitating their evaporation from the surface of the polymer into the air. This method has proven to be more effective than other stripping approaches, such as hot air extraction, removing more of the 96% of the presence of volatile organic compounds and unpleasant odors.
Our second approach uses an innovative, non-volatile, water-soluble extractant operating at atmospheric pressure to remove contaminants from polyolefin matrices.
Fych's sustainable solvent has been specifically developed to attack and extract contaminants and odors, both on the surfaces and inside of plastic, without compromising its integrity. This process not only ensures a significant reduction of contaminant and odor levels to safe limits, but is also environmentally friendly and economically viable, allowing for reduced production costs compared to traditional chemical recycling methods, offering a high quality and safe material for a wide range of uses.
A system fully compatible with the mechanical recycling of plastics.
It is incorporated at the end of the mechanical recycling process, just after the extrusion stage. The recycled pellets are introduced into an additional module where decontamination is carried out.
The implementation of this process to improve the quality of recycled plastics is aimed at both recyclers, allowing them to expand the market for their materials, and manufacturers of plastic products that seek to ensure a quality standard in their raw materials.
